Professor Martínez is an art historian who teaches courses in Modern and Contemporary Art. He is the author of Cuban Art & National Identity: The Vanguardia Painters 1927-1950 (University Press of Florida, 1994). He has recently completed amonographs on the pioneer of Cuban modernism Carlos Enríquez (1900-1957) and on the Cuban-American artist María Brito (b. 1948). These books are scheduled for publication in the Fall of 2009. He is currently the Chair of the Department of Art and Art History.
