Mette Tommerup | Assistant Professor
Painting
Mette Tommerup is an artist, "an artist as curator" and an active member of the Miami Art Community. She is currently an Assistant Painting Professor at Florida International University, where she has taken on innovative projects, including establishing and managing the alternative student exhibition venue: Artist Forum @ The FIU Painting Studios.

Tommerup received her MFA (1995) from School of Visual Art in NYC and her BFA (1990) from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Originally from Denmark, she has exhibited widely in Europe including exhibitions in Copenhagen, London and recently in Berlin. Tommerup has a strong educational background in Scandinavian Art History and Contemporary European Painting. Tommerup lived and worked in New York City for 10 years before relocating toMiami.

In most of her work, Tommerup is interested in configuring segments of memory found within her Danish heritage and her experiences in the United States. These memories are a product of national icons, photographs, personal experiences and second hand stories. She pieces together a patchwork of visual history that represents her experience, while attempting to allow a collective visual language. She places emphasis on the way images and realties are fed to us through the media, to the world. Tommerup wants people to see themselves and their own histories in her work, to allow a continuous narrative to flow throughout culture, history and contemporary life.
