Gretchen Scharnagl was born in New England. She moved to suburban South Florida as a child, where she still lives and works. Her two grown children and her husband play an integral part in her art making. In the past three years she has delivered a lecture, An Environmentalist in Suburbia, at SECAC West Virginia about art derived from the suburban landscape; participated in a drawing and installation residency at The Vermont Studio Center; was published in the National Drawing Annual (Manifest Creative Research Gallery and Drawing Center: Manifest Press, 2007), and received the 10 Outstanding Faculty Award and Adjunct Excellence-in-Teaching Award 2007-8 from FIU. She teaches Drawing, 2D design, Visual Thinking, and Color Theory. Her work evolved from installation and sculptural works to her current works on paper, for the sake of simplicity, portability and form following function.
